Giant Scorpion

Welcome back!  No punny title this time, just a quick and dirty build for my druid player's favorite form.  She spends more time like this than as her humanoid one.  Hey, it's not my job to judge, I'm just the DM.  So.  Here it is:

That's a big bug.  Are scorpions bugs?  They have six legs and stingers.  I say they are.  Either way my Druid loves to use this form. It adds a ton of effective hit points and makes them strong as heck.  Who cares if strength is your dump stat when you can just shapeshift?  Seems fair.  Still, I wanted a mini that she could use and be proud of.

What you'll need:

  • dollar store paints
  • decent primer
  • optional sealer
  • dollar store toy bugs
  • craft knife
  • hot glue
  • dollar store super glue
  • basing material
  • toothpick
As always, WASH THE TOYS FIRST with soap and water.  I still mess this up occasionally and I always regret it.  Toys can have mold release agents on them from the manufacturing process.  Those agents will make your paint peel very quickly.  There's nothing worse than realizing you have to redo an entire paint job, especially if you're as slow and terrible a painter as I am.

Now, start hackin' them up and putting them back together in whatever way works best using the super glue.  My cheap toys had the claws and tail already but no stinger in sight.  So the stinger is a toothpick end.  The legs are various other bug limbs.  All the gaps are filled with hot glue.  Basically, make it work however you can.

Lastly, paint to taste and base accordingly.  I used corks broken and painted as rocks for scenery.  They add some nice contrast and texture since my scorpion is black.  This is because my player specifically uses a black scorpion, but I'd actually recommend a different color for your mini.  Lighter colors just allow a bit more detailing on such tiny minis.  But still: Voila!  Yet another druid form to use.  No I'm not bitter about how it wrecks my encounters.  Not even a little.

"I'm a scorpion now, I gain 150 HP."
