Hay There Scarecrow

Welcome back frugal crafters.  Do you ever have this problem?  Do you have crows circling around your house at all hours of the day?  Yes?  There's got to be a better way!  There is- ah this bit gets old quick.  I'll bet that you guessed from the title what the build today is.  Here's a dirt cheap scarecrow:

This one was rough.  There I said it.  I admit it.  It was an attempt to make a mini out of nothing but toothpicks, Popsicle sticks and scrap paper.  It was maybe a bit too frugal.  It mostly worked.  I just tell myself that the magic used to create this monstrosity made the scarecrow deformed.  That said, I'm confident that if I tried this a second time it would turn out much better.  A ton of this build was experimenting.

  Needed Supplies:
  • either super or hot glue
  • toothpicks
  • Popsicle sticks
  • paper or canvas (cheesecloth would be good)
  • primer, paint, sealer
  • basing materials
I'll be honest, there's not much to this one.  Well.  There never is with my creations, but this one was less than most.  Yours will most likely look better. Make a skeleton out of toothpicks.  Glue them together.  Next the head and hat are both made of small pieces of Popsicle stick cut and glued together.  The rounded edges worked for the hat. Finally you cover the skeleton in cloth and hot glue it down as best you can.  You might have to play with it a bit but it'll work..  You can use toothpicks for claws or find whatever you'd like. I then put mine on a large (2" x 2") base which I decorated with dollar store craft sand for some texture.  I'm not sure why I went with green goo-sand.  I think I had witches on my mind instead of a scarecrow?  Whatever.  Paint it up.  And uh.  Yeah.  This one didn't work so well.  But hey, live and learn.

Pro tip though: just make minis like this a product of their environment.  Sure he's rough and gross but that's because he's from a swamp in the Feywild.  Everything looks weird over there.
