Welcome back again to the place with all the easy and cheap tabletop minis that look amazing. Okay, they look just aight. Most of them. Some of them.
But they are cheap and easy.
Anyway, this post was for another of my games as a DM. And sometimes you just need to drop a giant, magical, metal golem on your players. 'Cuz they're worth it. My players actually ended up not killing this creature (I know right?) but found another way around because the beauty of the mini was just too much for them. And also because it was at the end of a tough dungeon and they were pretty much out of resources. Six of one, half blah blah blah. Here it is:
Look at that big boy. Nice and thicc. I mean bulky. Nice and bulky and intimidating. I gave my golem a massive mace but you could give yours whatever you can think of. Sassy hand on hip also optional.
Here's what you'll need:
- hot glue gun
- a half decent paint primer
- cheap craft paints and optional sealer
- assorted buttons ( dollar stores carry these)
- dollar store super glue
- two old pill bottles
- scissors or better yet some stronger snips (they just need to cut the pill bottle)
- toothpicks
- dollar store rubber toys (these come in big packs, doesn't matter what they are, you just cut and shape the material for whatever you need)
- a craft knife (also known as a box cutters)
- your basing material
Bit more than the last posts but still pretty easy. There's not really a correct order here so I'll just explain what I used for certain pieces.
The main torso is a pill bottle, filled with hot glue for weight. Certain pill bottles have different textures or crenelations around the edge that can add some details. Cut up pill bottle lids were super glued to the torso to add more depth. The limbs are mostly hot glue with a toothpick skeleton for a base and stability. The leg plates are why you need a second bottle because you can cut individual plates to give an armored look.
The head and horns are cut up rubber toys. You can shape the rubber (mine were frogs, RIP guys) using your knife and make whatever helm you'd like. The material also makes good fill in case you're unfamiliar with the old super glue and baking soda trick for filling seams.
The feet are buttons. The mace is just toothpicks and larger buttons, though you could easily turn that into an axe or club. A sword is trickier but if you're good with a craft knife and have scrap material (plastic or foam) you can carve your own sword.
Prime, paint and seal. I had some "huge" size bases (3" x 3") left over from a fairly cheap pack. Check your Local Game Store for these if possible. Superglue the mini to the base, you can decorate the base too if you'd like. And that's pretty much it. Your very own Iron Golem, ready to follow your orders whether that's killing your player characters or holding your BBEG's umbrella.
