Forgotten Grave Diorama

Welcome back to My First Time Trying to Sculpt.  I found out that I really suck at it.  But hey, it worked okay for this little build I did.  It doesn't take any skill to roll clay into balls and then cut them into bricks.  So that's what I did.

This time around I'm not building for any specific reason, meaning it wasn't for a game I'm running or a prop for something.  It was just for fun.  And I'll be honest it was super relaxing working with dollar store modelling clay, even with zero artistic skill.  There's very little pressure if you mess it up.  Anyway here it is:

And a video so you can see the angles:

Everything you'll need for this build: dollar store craft knife, dollar store hot glue and super glue, modelling clay (dollar store), a cardboard base, toothpicks, a popsicle stick, dollar store craft paint, dollar store craft sand and basil.  The spice, not some dude aha sorry I couldn't resist.

To start, make your bricks.  The clay I used was natural air dry modelling clay.  I'm not sure how long exactly they took to dry as I just left them overnight and they were fully dried out by morning.
Also make the tombstone, the fallen log and the fountain/birdbath.  The headstone is simple but the log took a bit more work.  The log was one piece and the branches were each a separate piece of clay.  I then stuck toothpicks into each branch for support and stuck the other end of the toothpick into the log.  Take your crafting knife and add some bark-like details to the log (just make some lines and holes).  Once these are dried out, you have your building blocks.

The fountain took me to the limits of my minimal sculpting ability but you can get the desired shape by starting with a cylinder of clay and very slowly rolling the parts you want to be thinner.  It took me a few tries but you'll figure it out.  We'll come back to the fountain after it dries.

All dry? Next arrange your layout.  Build the crumbling wall, add some rocks, a broken door, whatever you want.  Stick the fountain and gravestone somewhere they can be easily seen.  As a side note super glue works best for the clay since it's very porous.  Hot glue won't stick.

Add some details.  The shovel is simply toothpicks and the end of a popsicle stick.  The stagnant "water" in the birdbath is clear plastic, like any clear plastic packaging that comes when you buy something.  Once you have your desired layout, give it all a base coat of paint.

The final steps are straightforward enough.  Add some sand (mixed with watered down PVA glue) for gravel and some basil for old, dead leaves.  Finish painting, washing and drybrushing the details.  Lastly I gave it a mod-podge clear coat for a bit of protection.  And that's it!  If I missed anything, let me know.
